# Editions & licensing

> How Alginte is licensed today, and what a paid edition will add.

  is decided today; specific tier boundaries and pricing will be published here when set.

## Today

Alginte is **free to run** and requires **no license key**. The free edition is
**keyless and does not expire** — there is nothing to register, and offline and
air-gapped installs keep working indefinitely. You stay current via the optional
[update notifier](/operate/updates), not a hard expiry.

Alginte is a **closed-source** product distributed as a Docker image and a standalone
JAR; the source is private, while bug reports and discussion are public on the
[community hub](https://github.com/alginte/community).

## Professional edition (planned)

A paid **Professional** edition is in development. It will use a license key validated
through [Polar](https://polar.sh) (the merchant of record handling checkout, invoicing,
and EU VAT), including support for offline/air-gapped activation.

  No features are gated today — every install is functionally identical. Which
  capabilities become Professional-only has not been decided; nothing you run now will be
  taken away without notice.
